My Thoughts on Leadership in an AI-Native World
The Polish Paradox
We have officially entered the "AI-Native" era. By now, your calendar is likely managed by an autonomous agent. Your first drafts—emails, presentations, proposals, meeting notes—are synthesized by an LLM in seconds. Your data visualizations are flawless.
But here is the paradox: as our tools become more "polished," our leadership presence risks becoming more diluted.
When everything is automated, the "standard" becomes a commodity. The most successful leaders I see right now aren't just protecting their energy; they are mastering the art of essentialism. They understand that AI is a powerful tool, but it is never a replacement for human ingenuity, judgment, expertise, or—most importantly—empathy.
In this landscape, leadership is no longer about who can produce the most; it’s about who can provide the most meaning. If you feel your presence is slipping, or if your team seems disengaged or overwhelmed by the sheer pace of automation, it’s time to perform a "By Design" audit.
Before your next All-Hands, ask yourself these three questions:
1. How can I invite open dialogue? Don't let the "efficiency" of AI kill the "efficacy" of your team. Start your next meeting with a temperature check. Set aside 15 minutes to check in with your team: What patterns are productive? Which ones are creating friction? Agency is the antidote to burnout, and agency starts with giving your team a voice.
2. Where is the empathy? In high-compression environments, empathy is often dismissed as a "luxury." I disagree. Empathy is a skill. It is the "thermostat" that regulates your team’s collective anxiety during periods of rapid change. When the floor is moving, people don't look to an algorithm for stability—they look to their leadership.
3. Am I “Adding Value” or just “Reporting the News”? If your meeting could have been an AI-generated summary, you aren't leading. You are reporting. Leadership is providing the narrative that gives the data meaning and the work a purpose.
Building Your "Change Fitness"
We know that hard work has never been enough. Self-advocacy, managing up, and constant alignment are the baseline. Let me add one more thing to that - Change Fitness.
Change Fitness is the ability to pivot your mindset as fast as the technology evolves without draining your Cognitive Bank Account. Just like physical or mental fitness, it requires intentional discipline before the crisis hits. It’s about building the resilience and agility that facilitate recovery when the next wave of disruption arrives.
In an AI-native era, Change Fitness looks like:
Reclaiming Time: Using automation to buy back the hours needed for deep thought.
Strategic Experimentation: Gamifying the learning process for you and your team to lower the "threat response" to learning new tools.
Radical Delegation: Trusting your team (and your tools) so you can focus on high-touch human connection.
The leaders thriving right now are those who have reclaimed their time and reinvested it where it matters most: in their customers, their stakeholders, and their people.
AI is a brilliant sidekick, but it cannot navigate the complexities of human trust. There has never been a better—or more necessary—time to be fully, authentically human at work.
Until next time,
Live free,
Blessing
